Python Split Function: Using split() in Python

The split function in Python is defined as the function which breaks the big string into smaller strings is known as the split() function. This function returns the output of strings in the form of a list.

Python split function is called as a built- in method which is used to divide a big string into a list of small strings by using a delimiter. If the delimiter is not specified then the program considers the whitespace as a delimiter by default.

In this function we can use delimiter such as comma, semicolon or any character. This type of function helps in analyzing the data easily.

1.What is the Python Split Function?

The Python string split() method breaks down a whole string into a list of strings by separating it with the specified separator. We can learn this function by taking an example:

string.split(separator, maxsplit)

 Used Parameters are:

Parameter Values

1.     separator – While splitting the string into small strings we use a separator. If the separator is not specified, then by default whitespace is considered as a separator.

2.     Maxsplit – it specifies how many splits of a single string we want. And if not specified the default value will be considered as -1.

2. How to use the python split function in the program?

We can use python split function by calling the split() function with specifying the parameters i.e  separator and maxsplit  with the string object which splits the whole string into different strings in the form of list.

We can use this python split function with empty parameters or specified parameters, we had added an examples of using split() function are as follows:

 1-     Using split() method with no parameters

 Code Explanation: In the above code we have defined the variable “text “ by the string “Welcome to technogeeks” , then we call the split method having no parameters to specify the variable text which displays the strings splitted by whitespace because it uses by default separator as whitespace.

3. How to use the split function in Python? 

We can use python split function by calling the split() function with specifying the separator and maxsplit  as a parameter with the string object which splits the whole string into different strings in the form of a list.

4.How to use the split() method in Python by using the maxsplit parameter? 

We can use this python split function with specified parameters such as separator and maxsplit, we had added an examples of using split() function using maxsplit parameter  are as follows:

Code Explanation: In the above code we have defined a variable text, and we had call a split function specifying the parameters like separator is # and maxsplit parameter is set  to 1 so that will return a list with 2 elements!
