Azure Fundamentals [AZ-900]

Introduction

Before cloud computing, on-prem (on premise) systems were used in all the organizations which had a lot of drawbacks related to in house dependency, maintenance , power failure , system failure , setup cost etc  and all the data and control were on a central server.

If you wanted to access some data, you had to connect to an on-prem (on premise) server. In this system, many computers were connected together in a network called rack and cluster. This allowed them to share resources and work together. While it was better, it still had its own issues.

After that, cloud computing comes in to solve these kinds of problems. Cloud computing allows us to use and manage resources over the internet easily, making it more flexible, scalable, and efficient.

Cloud computing is not only in demand in the IT industry as well as other sectors as well where IT support is required like Banking , Insurance, education , healthcare, etc.

Also, there are many companies in the market who provide cloud based services like –

  • Amazon’s AWS Cloud Computing
  • Microsoft’s Azure Cloud Computing
  • Google’s Google Cloud Computing
  • Alibaba cloud

Azure Cloud Computing is one of the in demand cloud service providers worldwide. It offers over 200+ services that help businesses, from startups to MNCs.

Additionally, with Microsoft Azure, companies can run everything from simple websites to advanced AI applications.

What is Microsoft Azure?

Microsoft Azure is a cloud computing platform by Microsoft, similar to other cloud computing platforms like AWS (Amazon Web Services) & Google Cloud.

It is mainly used for building, testing, deploying, and managing applications through its data centers. The main reason organizations use Microsoft Azure is that it is cost-effective. Instead of spending a lot of money on physical servers and data centers, organizations can use Microsoft Azure to get virtual machines (VMs), storage, and networking only when they need them, paying for just what they use (pay-as-you-go).

It offers –

  • SaaS (Software as a Service
  • PaaS (Platform as a Service)
  • IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service)

Also, it supports various programming languages such as –

1. Azure Computing Service

Microsoft Azure helps you use services like computing and storage whenever you need them, so you can scale up or scale down the services based on your needs and most importantly you only pay for what you use (pay-as-you-go).

Azure Computing Services are –

  • Virtual Machines (VMs): So basically Virtual Machines are virtual versions of physical computers. You can run different operating systems (OS) and applications on them, just like you would on a regular computer.
  • App Services: This is a service that makes it easy to build, deploy, and scale web applications and APIs. You don’t have to worry about managing the hardware or servers; Azure takes care of that for you.
  • Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS):  This is a service for running and managing containers using Kubernetes.
  • Azure Functions: This is a serverless computing service that helps you run code in response to events without managing any servers.

2. Azure Storage

Azure Storage is Microsoft’s cloud storage solution for today’s data needs. It is very flexible and can handle the storage and performance requirements of modern applications.

It offers –

  • Storage for large amounts of data
  • A file system service for the cloud
  • Unstructured data storage
  • Reliable messaging storage
  • NoSQL database

Azure Storage services –

  • Blob Storage:  This service is mainly used for storing large amounts of unstructured data (text files, images, or videos)
  • File Storage: Managed file shares in the cloud.
  • Queue Storage: Service for storing large numbers of messages.
  • Table Storage: NoSQL data storage for structured data.

3. Azure Networking

Azure Networking helps the creation and management of secure and flexible network infrastructures:

  • Virtual Network (VNet): This is like creating your own private network in the cloud. It allows your resources (like virtual machines) to securely communicate with each other.
  • Azure Load Balancer:  These distribute incoming traffic across multiple servers so no single server gets too busy. This makes your applications run more reliably and handle more users
  • Azure DNS: Allows you to host your DNS domains alongside your Azure applications.

4. Azure Databases –

Azure Databases is a collection of cloud-based database services provided by Microsoft Azure. These services let you store, manage, and access data easily and securely.

  • Azure SQL Database: Managed relational database service based on SQL Server.
  • Azure Cosmos DB: Globally distributed, multi-model database service.
  • Azure Database for MySQL/PostgreSQL: Managed MySQL and PostgreSQL database services.

5. Azure Identity and Access Management (IAM)

Azure Identity and Access Management (IAM) is a set of tools and services from Microsoft Azure that controls who can access your cloud resources and what they can do with them. It ensures only authorized users can access and perform specific actions on your Azure resources.

  • Azure Active Directory (AD): Identity and access management service for managing users and resources.
  • Role-Based Access Control (RBAC): Allows detailed control over who can access Azure resources and what they can do.

6. Azure Security

Azure offers robust security solutions to protect your data and applications:

  • Azure Security Center: It provides combined security management and advanced threat protection.
  • Azure Key Vault: Helps safeguard cryptographic keys and secrets used by cloud applications and services.
  • Azure Sentinel: Cloud-native SIEM (Security Information and Event Management) that provides intelligent security analytics and threat intelligence.
