Objectives of DBMS

Introduction

DBMS is a programming language used to organize and manage a vast amount of data in a well-mannered form. It allows users to perform operations like modifying, creating, and inquiring about a database, as well as managing security and access controls for the database. There are several objectives for DBMS.

DBMS is used to enhance security and data accessibility which we will discuss further, but first we have to understand what the DBMS is?

What is DBMS

As we discussed earlier, DBMS is a programming language used to organize and manage vast amounts of data in a well-mannered form. They have changed the way that many organizations operate. It is a very active research area.

However, DBMS has occurred in three generations

  • 1st gen- Hierarchical model
  • 2nd gen- Relational model
  • 3rd gen- Object-oriented DBMS

DBMS uses the normalization technique to optimize the organization of data by splitting large tables into smaller ones.

The popular types of DBMS are relational, distributed, hierarchical, object-oriented, and network.

DBMS works as an interface between the database and the user.It works to maintain the data and make them easily accessible.

Structure of DBMS

The structure of DBMS is organized in different layers and each layer has its own functionality and specific purpose.

User Interface

This layer interacts with the user and application. User interfaces can contain several APIs and GPIs that help users submit queries, retrieve data, manipulate, and manage the database schema.

Query Processor

The query processor contains –

  • Query compiler: It translates the high-level query language into the machine-specific language.
  • Query optimizer: It analyzes the query and executes it efficiently by considering factors like indexing, join methods, and access paths to minimize execution time.

Transaction Manager

DBMS uses ACID (Atomicity, Consistency, Isolation, Durability) properties of transactions. ACID properties ensure the implementation, processing, and execution to maintain data integrity.

Storage Manager

It contains –

  • Buffer manager: It stores the data in memory, decreases the load on the disk and improves performance. Manage the data transfer from disk to database buffer.
  • File manager: It handles the physical storage of the disk by allocating and deallocating space for disk files.

Data Manager:

 It contains-

  • Data Dictionary: It stores the metadata information of the structure of the database, data types, constraints, and relationships.
  • Data Integrity Module: Define data integrity rules and constraints defined in the data dictionary.

Objectives of DBMS

DBMS has many objectives to increase the efficiency and organized handling of data in an organization. The main objectives of DBMS are –

Data Availability:

DBMS ensures that the format of data should be meaningful and at a reasonable cost so that a wide range of users can access it.

Data Organization and Structuring:

DBMS structures and efficiently organize the data to eliminate data complexity and provide a framework for relationships between different data entities.

Data Integrity and Consistency:

DBMS uses integrity constraints like primary keys, and foreign keys to maintain the integrity and accuracy of data.

Data Security and Authorization:

To maintain the authority of data and protect it from unauthorized access, DBMS validates the user and gives permissions to only authorized users to view, modify, and delete.

Data Independence:

DBMS allows easier modification of databases without affecting the applications.

Functions of  DBMS

DBMS efficiently organizes and manages large amounts of data. However, these functions are essential for data integrity, security, and accessibility. Here are some of the functions of DBMS-

Data Definition:

The function of DBMS is to define the structure of the database, relationships, and tables. It also involves data types, primary keys, foreign keys, and other attributes.

Data Manipulation:

It includes several data manipulation operations from updating existing records, and deleting records to querying the database.

Data Retrieval:

It allows users to retrieve information from a database by using SQL queries.

Data Storage Management:

It manages the storage of data on storage devices and optimizes the allocation and deallocation of space for data and organizing files to improve performance.

Data Integrity Management:

DBMS implements integrity constraints like primary keys, and foreign keys to maintain the integrity of data and ensure the consistency and accuracy of data.

Advantages and Disadvantages of DBMS

AdvantageDisadvantage
1) A DBMS(database management system) is used to store and retrieve data in an efficient manner.1) The cost of DBMS software and hardware is enormously expensive which affects the organizational budget.
2) DBMS is a reliable manager to work with numerous applications.  2) DBMS is inadequate for handling complex mathematical calculations.
3) DBMS guarantees data security and privacy.3) Most DBMS systems are complicated, employees need to be instructed on how to operate them.
4) DBMS implements a high degree of integrity to ensure the accuracy and protection from unauthorized data.4) Using the same applications again and again leads to data loss.
